Hear Maestro Tchivzhel discuss Igor Stravinsky’s famous ballet, “The Firebird”. The audio performance below is excerpted from live performances of “The Russian Sorcerer & His Apprentices” on January 25-26, 2020 by the GSO, led by Maestro Edvard Tchivzhel.
The full concert featured crowd favorites, including Glinka’s exuberant Overture to “Russlan and Ludmilla.” and Borodin’s Second Symphony, subtitled “Heroic” (inspired by the lore of Russia’s medieval knights).
The program also featured Borodin’s best-known work, the energetic “Polovtsian Dances.” Broadway fans may recognize the piece’s themes as the inspiration for the 1953 musical “Kismet.”
Closing the program were two classical-music dazzlers: Rimsky-Korsakov’s brilliantly orchestrated “Capriccio espagnol” and Stravinsky’s electrifying “Firebird” Suite.
